This week’s Hooked on Fridays is doubly fun for me. Not only do I get to share something I’m hooked on with all of you, but I also get to announce the winner of our Jamie Drake giveaway!! You know how Dancing With the Stars keeps you in suspense for two hours before they announce the winner in the last two minutes of the big finale show?? Yep, I’m going to do that too!! Still with me?? Good!! Isn’t turquoise such a fresh and happy colour?? It can be kind of green, kind of blue, fresh and breezy, bold and bright…
Chemical formula: CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8 4H2O
- Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral that is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium.
- The word turquoise was derived around the 16th century from the French language—either from Turquois (Turkish—although turquoise doesn’t actually occur in Turkey) or pierre turquin (dark-blue stone).
- Turquoise has a maximum hardness of just under 6, making it just slightly more than window glass.
- Colour can range from white to a powder blue to a sky blue, and from blue-green to a yellowish green. The blue is attributed to idiochromatic copper, and the green may be the result of either iron impurities or dehydration.
- The lustre is usually waxy to subvitreous, and is usually opaque but may be semitransparent in thin sections.
- Turquoise is typically found in in arid regions, including the American Southwest.
We don’t actually have any turquoise in our house. But we do have a turquoise car :-)
