HOME DESIGN IS A BALANCED RELATIONSHIP

"The basic rules of proportion and scale are unchanging. They are reinterpreted according to the needs of the time. I like simplicity and I believe in restraint. Above all, there should be harmony-of proportion, line, color, and feeling. The most important element in designing is the relationship between objects- in size, form, texture, color, and meaning. None of these is in good taste in itself but only in relationship to where it has been placed and what purpose it is to serve."
-Eleanor McMillen Brown

Designing a room is about finding a comfortable balance between the different elements and the furnishings in the space.

The relationship of items to one another to form a pleasing whole is termed balance. There are two forms of balance — symmetrical and asymmetrical.

Bilateral symmetry is like the human body: there are two of everything. Asymmetry refers to an imbalance, such as two candles of slightly different sizes next to each other. Symmetry is very restful, while asymmetry is used to add visual motion and excitement

A perfect balance is when a room is both visually calm and exciting.

Sometimes a neutral room needs a pop for excitement

Contrast of neutrals and textures can create excitement.

The varied heights of the built ins create excitement, as well as the wood panels.

A white kitchen with beams and a slate floor creates excitement, yet a perfect balance.
Neutrals and texture are well balanced in this dining room.

Color adds  balance to this all white dining room.
The hallway is in perfect balance to the living room.
This bedroom is in balance, both symmetrical and  asymmetrical furnishings.
